Rousseau arrives at the beach and warns that the Others are coming. She describes the loss of her daughter after a column of black smoke appeared years earlier. When another smoke column rises inland, the survivors seek somewhere to shelter. Rousseau does not recognize the hatch, but offers to guide a party to dynamite at the Black Rock. Jack, Kate, Locke, Hurley and Arzt accompany her into the jungle, where they evade the monster and reach a stranded ship.
Flashbacks follow passengers before the flight. Jack talks with Ana Lucia at the airport bar, Sawyer faces deportation after a fight, and the marshal provokes Kate by discussing Tom's toy airplane. Shannon reports Sayid's unattended luggage to an officer after arguing with Boone. On the island, Jack gives Sawyer a gun for the voyage. Sawyer finally tells him about meeting Christian in Sydney and hearing his pride in his son, moving Jack before they part.
The first attempt to launch the raft damages its mast and rudder, but Michael and Jin repair it with help from the camp. Walt leaves Vincent with Shannon, suggesting that she talk to the dog about Boone. Sun gives Jin an improvised translation guide, and they reconcile before his departure. Sayid supplies communications equipment and a flare, while Charlie collects messages in a bottle. Michael, Walt, Jin and Sawyer finally sail away as the other survivors watch from shore.
