Jin's attempt to control Sun's clothing leads to an argument on the beach. Michael intervenes, but Sun slaps him and later explains that she was trying to protect him from Jin. When Michael's unfinished raft burns that night, suspicion falls on Jin, whose hands are injured. Sawyer captures him and brings him back to the beach. Michael beats him until Sun publicly speaks English, insisting that Jin burned his hands trying to put out the fire.
Flashbacks show Jin asking Mr. Paik for permission to marry Sun and accepting employment with him. His first attempt to deliver a warning to an official fails because he does not understand the threat behind the assignment. Sent back with an armed companion, Jin brutally beats the official to prevent his murder. Afterward, he visits the fisherman father he falsely claimed was dead. His father forgives him and encourages him to take Sun to America and start over.
Locke interrupts the beach confrontation by warning that the survivors should consider threats from outside their group rather than attack one another. Michael decides to build another raft. Jin cannot accept Sun's long concealment of her English and rejects her request to restart their marriage. Shannon separately chooses to continue seeing Sayid despite Boone's disapproval. Finally, Locke privately asks Walt why he burned the raft. Walt admits that he likes the island and does not want to move again.
