House M.D.

Season 3

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

After the shooting, House receives ketamine treatment and briefly walks without the pain and limp that have shaped his work. The improvement fades, and his team returns to its familiar cases and arguments. One patient, a police detective named Michael Tritter, retaliates after House humiliates him during clinic duty. Tritter investigates House’s Vicodin use, freezes his accounts and pressures Wilson and the diagnostic fellows to turn against him. House refuses to apologize or accept Tritter’s deal, and the dispute ends with House entering rehabilitation before his court hearing; the drug charges are dismissed.

The pressure alters the team’s daily work. Cameron and Chase’s relationship becomes harder to hide. After his mistaken treatment kills a patient, Foreman fears becoming like House and decides to leave the team. Foreman resigns and applies elsewhere, while House initially tries to make him stay without offering a direct apology. The fatal case makes their disagreements over treatment more than an argument about whose diagnosis is cleverest.

In “Human Error,” House’s team treats a Cuban woman rescued at sea with her husband, who has brought her to Princeton-Plainsboro for a diagnosis. Her heart stops while she is speaking, and the team discovers a congenital heart defect. As Foreman prepares to leave, House fires Chase. Cameron confronts House and then gives him her resignation. Foreman leaves as planned, and the three original fellows are gone from House’s diagnostic team by the season’s end.
