Scott Hunter accepts the league's Most Valuable Player award and speaks openly about the relationship he once hid, acknowledging Kip in his speech. In July, Shane collects Ilya from the airport for two weeks at his cottage. With no games or hotel departures interrupting them, they agree to try being honest about their feelings. Ilya tells Shane about his mother's death by suicide, while Shane admits his fear of coming out to his parents.
Talk of Ilya marrying Svetlana for citizenship upsets Shane, who asks him to find another way. Shane proposes Ottawa as a future team so they can live closer together. A joint charity would also give them a public reason to become friends. As they talk about wanting a shared life, Ilya says he loves Shane, and Shane says it back. They discuss a hockey school raising money for suicide prevention in memory of Ilya's mother, Irina.
Their privacy ends when Shane's father, David, arrives unexpectedly and sees them kissing. Ilya accompanies Shane to his parents' home, where Shane comes out and explains their relationship. His mother, Yuna, listens as he apologises for disappointing her, then tells him he has nothing to apologise for. She asks forgiveness for making him feel unable to tell her sooner. Over a family meal, they discuss the couple's plans. Shane and Ilya leave holding hands, with his parents arranging to visit them later.
