Hunter

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

A conversation at the Sochi Olympics unsettles Scott Hunter when his teammates discuss the danger faced by gay athletes in Russia. His story then returns to New York four months earlier, when a stop at a smoothie shop introduces him to Kip Grady. Scott starts returning before home games, treating Kip's drink as part of his winning routine. Kip gradually realises who his customer is, while their conversations become flirtatious and their interest becomes harder to miss.

They run into one another again while Kip works at a charity event. Scott invites him home, where their first date becomes an overnight stay. He asks Kip to remain with him and admits that he has never brought another man home. Kip accepts a relationship that must stay hidden, but ordinary outings become difficult. Even a visit to an art gallery frightens Scott. Kip begins lying to his friends and family, shrinking his own life to fit Scott's secrecy.

Elena warns Scott that Kip's willingness to endure the arrangement does not mean he is happy. Scott explains that losing his parents as a child made hockey his family, which helps explain his fear of risking his place in the sport. When Kip asks him to attend his birthday at a gay bar, even as a friend, Scott refuses. Kip leaves for his father's home and breaks down. Scott reaches the party but watches from outside as Kip celebrates with friends.
