Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

When Rory wins a place at Chilton, Lorelai cannot cover its tuition and asks her estranged parents, Emily and Richard, for a loan. They agree on condition that Lorelai and Rory come to Friday dinners in Hartford, bringing the family back into one another’s lives. Rory moves from Stars Hollow High to the demanding prep school, where Paris initially treats her as a rival. At home, Rory and her longtime friend Lane stay close as Rory slowly builds a wary friendship with Paris.

Rory’s first boyfriend, Dean, is part of her adjustment to Chilton and to growing up. On their three-month anniversary, he tells her he loves her; unable to say it back, she asks for time, and Dean ends the relationship. Rory tries to carry on, but a kiss with Tristan brings her feelings for Dean into focus. By the finale she runs to Dean, tells him she loves him, and they get back together, resolving the season’s first romance without making Rory’s school and family tensions disappear.

Lorelai’s own romantic life circles around Max Medina, Rory’s English teacher. She and Max date, split when Lorelai becomes uneasy about how readily Rory accepts him in their family life, and later reconnect. Christopher returns and proposes, but Lorelai declines to rebuild a family with him. Max then proposes with a thousand yellow daisies, leaving Lorelai to consider marriage. Her closeness with Luke remains a friendship marked by mutual concern, while she and Sookie keep talking about opening an inn of their own.
