Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Ned questions Pycelle about Jon Arryn's death and borrows the book of noble family histories Arryn had been reading. Pycelle recalls his last words about the strength of the seed. Littlefinger directs Ned towards an armourer, where he meets the apprentice Gendry. Ned recognises Robert's features in the boy. Another possible witness, Arryn's former squire Hugh, dies when Gregor Clegane strikes him during the tournament joust, ending Ned's chance to question him.

Returning from the Wall, Tyrion gives Bran a saddle design that could allow him to ride again, despite Robb's hostile reception. At Castle Black, Jon protects Samwell Tarly from the other recruits. Sam explains that his father forced him to relinquish his inheritance and join the Watch under threat of death. In Vaes Dothrak, Viserys hits Daenerys, but she strikes back and warns him never to raise a hand to her again.

Catelyn and Rodrik stop at the crossroads inn while travelling north. She tries to avoid being noticed when Tyrion arrives, but he recognises her and calls out. Catelyn responds by identifying men whose families serve her father, Hoster Tully. Having secured their attention and loyalty, she accuses Tyrion of arranging the attack on Bran. She asks them to seize him and help bring him to justice for her son's attempted murder.
