Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Years after the Alliance defeats the Independents, Malcolm Reynolds keeps his battered transport ship Serenity flying with his former war partner Zoë and a crew assembled from the frontier. The pilot brings aboard Simon and River Tam, fugitives from the government, and explains why Mal chooses to protect them. Even a profitable train robbery turns when the crew discovers it stole medicine from settlers, so Mal returns the cargo and accepts Niska’s anger.

Jobs keep testing the crew’s loyalties. On a remote settlement, Simon and River are seized while Shepherd Book is wounded; Mal leaves for help, then turns the ship around to rescue them. Jayne finds that a robbery has made him a folk hero, while an apparently new wife, Saffron, is revealed as a con artist. A ship failure nearly kills Mal, and a hospital break-in gives Simon a chance to examine River before Jayne tries to sell the siblings to the Alliance. The crew rescues Mal and Wash from Niska, and Zoë makes clear that the captain is not expendable.

Later, Mal and Zoë try to return former comrade Tracey to his family, only for his scheme to end with Mal shooting him and still honoring the burial request. The crew also defends a brothel from a landowner who wants the child he fathered there. In the last episode of the intended order, bounty hunter Jubal Early boards Serenity for River; she turns the ship’s corridors and communications against him, and the crew accepts her more fully. The series ends with this family still aboard, while the larger conflict around River remains unresolved.
