Ethelrida Smutny traces Kansas City's criminal history in a school report. Jewish, Irish and Italian gangs exchange their bosses' sons to secure peace, but the arrangements end in betrayal. Patrick Milligan survives both exchanges and becomes Rabbi, a trusted member of the Fadda family. Donatello adopts Rabbi after making him kill his father. By 1950, Loy Cannon's Black crime organisation has made the same bargain with Donatello Fadda: Loy takes in Zero, while Satchel lives with the Italians under Rabbi's protection. Loy and Doctor Senator also pitch a credit-card scheme to a banker, who refuses to invest in their proposal.
Donatello is accidentally struck in the neck by a child's BB pellet while riding with Josto. A private hospital refuses to treat him, forcing the family to seek help elsewhere. At the public hospital, Josto meets nurse Oraetta Mayflower and asks her to look after his father. Oraetta later injects Donatello with morphine, kills him and takes his ring. Across the street from her apartment, Ethelrida's parents struggle to keep their funeral home afloat. Thurman admits to his daughter that he borrowed money from Loy and cannot repay it. As father and daughter go inside, Oraetta watches their home from her window.
