About the series

Contains story spoilers.

Doctor Who begins with a small mystery in a London junkyard. Schoolteachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright follow their pupil Susan Foreman and discover that she lives in a police box with her grandfather, a secretive traveller called the Doctor. The opening story, An Unearthly Child, leaves the contemporary school setting for a prehistoric society divided by the struggle to control fire. This shift establishes a programme able to move through human history, speculative futures and imagined alien societies. The police box is the TARDIS, a ship larger inside than outside that travels through time and space. It makes each departure a change in setting and kind of story, while its interior gives the travellers a recurring place to return to.

William Hartnell’s Doctor is not introduced as a ready-made guide. He distrusts the teachers and initially takes them away against their wishes; Susan is both his granddaughter and the person connecting Ian and Barbara to his secret life. The four form an ensemble with different kinds of knowledge. The Doctor brings alien experience, Susan stands between his origins and human life, while Ian and Barbara approach events through ordinary expectations. Those differences generate argument and uncertainty as well as practical help. The group’s dynamic changes through travel: an arrangement that begins with coercion can become a shared undertaking, and the Doctor’s choices are open to challenge from companions who must live with the consequences.

In the seven-part story The Daleks, the TARDIS lands in a petrified forest and the travellers enter a metal city on an alien world. There they encounter beings who become the Doctor’s enduring enemies. Terry Nation’s serial makes the environment part of the conflict: a damaged landscape and a population shaped by fear turn exploration into a question of responsibility. The Doctor’s curiosity is not automatically virtuous, because his decisions can expose others to danger. The story joins a monster encounter to an ethical problem about survival and cooperation. Its movement from unfamiliar terrain to a hostile society shows how the programme makes imagined worlds carry ideas without leaving the adventure form.

The Doctor can survive a failing body through regeneration, emerging with a different face and temperament while carrying memories of earlier lives. That is why Hartnell, Eccleston and Gatwa are versions of one traveller rather than unrelated heroes sharing a title. Regeneration makes survival complicated: companions can lose the person they recognize even though their friend is still present. The new Doctor also has to discover how this changed body and personality work. It gives the series a way to alter its central performance without discarding its history. A departure can be both an ending and a beginning, with familiar relationships suddenly needing to be understood again. The changing face sits beside the blue box as one of the programme's defining ideas.

The 2005 television revival finds a new entry through Rose Tyler, a young woman in contemporary London. In Rose, she meets the Ninth Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston, as animated shop-window figures threaten her and people close to her. Her mother Jackie and boyfriend Mickey ground the danger in an everyday life Rose cannot simply leave behind. The Doctor’s blue box opens onto a larger universe, but her relationships remain in view. This version retains the contrast between an ordinary home and extraordinary travel while making the companion’s personal world an active part of the continuing story. It presents a fresh entry through one person’s encounter without requiring every earlier screen story as background.

Rose is more than a witness to adventures. She connects the Doctor’s alien perspective with family, friendship and the consequences of leaving home. The revived programme combines largely self-contained encounters with continuing relationships and season-level questions. Individual stories introduce new threats or locations while the travelling partnership develops. The Doctor’s confidence can coexist with grief, secrecy or uncertainty; a companion can question decisions from a human point of view. The TARDIS therefore works as a story engine and as a setting where changes in trust become visible. This combination offers a clear adventure while preserving emotional continuity between episodes and gives the recurring cast a role beyond explaining the latest alien threat.

The Church on Ruby Road introduces another screen-era starting point. The Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, meets Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson. Ruby was abandoned at a church as a baby and is raised by Carla and Cherry Sunday; her questions about her birth mother intersect with strange events and the Doctor’s arrival. The 2023 Christmas special combines goblins, a threatened baby and a journey into Ruby’s past, establishing her as a companion. Its premise links an intimate personal mystery to a time-travel adventure. When the Doctor rescues Ruby as a baby, the journey becomes a fight for the life she has already lived. Ruby’s decision to follow the blue box grows out of that encounter, linking a new adventure to the family and home she knows.

Ruby's later return to ordinary life is not a clean break from the fantastic. In Lucky Day, her relationship with Conrad draws her into a campaign against UNIT, the organization confronting alien threats on Earth. A staged attack is used to discredit the very danger she knows exists, turning public suspicion into another kind of weapon. Ruby must navigate betrayal by someone close to her as well as the real Shreek. The story gives a former companion problems the Doctor cannot simply solve by inviting her aboard again. Across these different eras, adventure repeatedly begins with someone trying to understand a strange encounter. The TARDIS opens the door, but what happens outside it can change the lives waiting back home.
