Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Season 8 begins at the desert wreck from the previous finale: Natalie Davis has abducted Sara and left her trapped beneath a car as a storm threatens the search. Grissom and the team follow clues from Natalie’s apartment and workshop while Sara struggles to free herself; they find her alive and bring the miniature-killer case to a close. Sara returns to work, but the ordeal and the accumulated weight of seeing death every day shape her decision to leave Las Vegas. She and Grissom acknowledge their relationship, and her departure becomes personal as well as professional.
The lab’s other routines continue, including Hodges’s deliberately elaborate murder games for Wendy and the technicians, while several cases expose pressure within the team. Warrick’s divorce and prescription-drug use strain his judgment as he investigates Lou Gedda, a former mob figure whose nightclub and connections reach into law enforcement. When a dancer’s body is found in Warrick’s car, he becomes a suspect and tries to clear himself while Grissom and the others investigate around official restrictions. Cases range from a child’s death that hits Catherine hard to a bizarre series of victims with green blood caused by a homemade drug.
In the finale, Warrick is found beside Gedda’s murdered body and arrested, but Grissom’s unofficial forensic work exposes a frame-up involving a corrupt officer. Warrick is cleared and reunites with the team for breakfast. As he leaves alone, Undersheriff McKeen confronts him about continuing to investigate and shoots him in his car. The episode ends with Warrick gravely wounded; his death is confirmed in the next season’s opening episode, so the eighth-season ending itself is the shooting and immediate aftermath.
