The kiss gives Jeong-hyeok and Se-ri a way to pretend they are an ordinary couple aboard the boat. The coast guard lets them go but sends them back to shore, closing that escape route. Se-ri then tries to use her paraglider again. Jeong-hyeok finds her on a cliff and warns that she will be shot down; her radio signal brings soldiers close enough that they must jump together to escape.
Back in the village, Se-ri decides Jeong-hyeok needs a promotion if he is going to get her home. She attends Young-ae’s birthday celebration and uses her eye for fashion to win over the colonel’s wife. Jeong-hyeok pursues his own investigation, taking a sample of the metal attached to the suspicious trucks. He also helps Man-bok recover a stolen wallet, unaware of the wiretapper’s guilt over his brother.
Se-ri grows more comfortable with the soldiers and village women, but she becomes lost during a darkened market visit. Jeong-hyeok finds her by holding a scented candle above the crowd, turning an earlier request into something she can recognise. Seo Dan is travelling to see him, while Se-ri’s brothers resist suggestions that she may have survived in the North. A Swiss flashback reveals an earlier meeting, when Jeong-hyeok asked Se-ri to photograph him with Dan.
