Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
After extensive surgery and three months of recovery, Beckett returns to work and resumes the hunt for the sniper who shot her. She tells Castle she remembers nothing from the shooting, including his declaration of love, but privately tells her therapist that the memory is intact. Castle believes her public account and tries to keep her safe from the larger conspiracy. Their new captain, Victoria Gates, also challenges Castle’s place at the precinct, so Beckett must re-establish herself while managing the fear that surfaces during armed confrontations.
Beckett hides her worsening trauma from Castle and the team, even as a sniper case brings her fear into the open. She continues to act on leads from Roy Montgomery’s files, while Castle worries that pursuing the case will put her in greater danger. The gap between what each knows breaks wider in “47 Seconds”: Beckett admits during an interrogation that she remembers the shooting and Castle’s confession, and Castle overhears her. He takes her silence as proof that she does not return his feelings, although Beckett has not said that and is privately confronting why she has kept the truth from him.
A murder linked to Beckett’s shooting leads back to Montgomery’s stolen files and to Cole Maddox, the would-be assassin who escapes. Castle asks Beckett to stop investigating, but she presses on; she and Esposito are suspended for withholding information, and Beckett resigns. She then goes to Castle’s home, apologizes and finally acts on her feelings, beginning their relationship with a kiss. At the episode’s end, Maddox confronts Mr. Smith, the man who has secretly protected Beckett, and threatens him for the information he holds, leaving the larger conspiracy active.
