Brandy Friday wants a romantic role beyond the parts Hollywood usually offers her. She agrees to star in a remake of the classic Hotel Reverie, playing its male lead as a woman. ReDream's technology sends her consciousness into a reconstruction of the film, where the other performers exist as responsive digital characters. Producers speak into her ear as she tries to follow the original scenes and reach the final line that will release her.
Her inability to play a required piano piece disrupts the story and changes her relationship with Clara, played in the original by Dorothy Chambers. Calling Clara by the actress's name awakens memories drawn from Dorothy's life. A spilled drink then cuts the production's connection, freezing everybody except Brandy and Clara. While technicians work for minutes outside, the two women spend months together inside the film and fall in love.
Restoring the programme resets Clara's memories, leaving Brandy to complete the romance with somebody who no longer shares their time together. At the climax, Clara shoots her husband to save Brandy and is herself fatally shot. Brandy holds her, says the required final line and returns to the studio. After the remake succeeds, a gift from producer Kimmy offers a telephone connection to another simulated Dorothy. Brandy can speak to her again, but the renewed contact leaves the loss of their shared months and the shape of any future relationship unsettled.
