Amanda collapses at the school where she teaches, and doctors discover a brain tumour they cannot remove through ordinary treatment. Her husband Mike is offered an experimental alternative by Rivermind representative Gaynor. The company can replace the damaged tissue and sustain its function through remote servers. The operation costs nothing, but keeping Amanda alive requires a monthly subscription. Mike agrees, hoping they can return to their life together.
Recovery gradually becomes a succession of restrictions. Travelling beyond the service's coverage interrupts Amanda's function, while her ordinary conversations begin turning into advertisements she does not remember delivering. Upgrades promise to remove the inconveniences at prices the couple struggle to afford. Mike secretly performs degrading tasks for paying viewers online. Brief premium access allows them pleasurable moments, but the expense and the discovery of his broadcasts undermine their jobs and security.
By another anniversary, Amanda spends much of each day asleep and most waking moments advertising products. Mike buys a short interval of premium service and increases her serenity so they can speak calmly. She asks him to end her life while her awareness is absent. When an advert takes over, he suffocates her with a pillow. He then enters the room containing his broadcast setup carrying a blade. The episode stops before showing what he does there, leaving the final act suggested rather than witnessed.
