Joan Is Awful

Contains spoilers for this episode.

Joan has an uncomfortable day at work, meets an old lover and admits to her therapist that she feels like a supporting character in her own life. That evening she finds a programme on Streamberry reproducing those events, with Salma Hayek playing a crueller version of her. Her fiancé sees the meeting she concealed, and her employer sees private conversations made public. Joan's life begins falling apart as the series keeps generating new episodes.

A lawyer explains that the service's terms permit the use of information collected from her devices. Hoping Hayek will force Streamberry to stop, Joan behaves outrageously in public, knowing the actress's likeness will repeat it onscreen. Hayek discovers that her own contract also gives the company broad control. The two women join forces and break into the offices to destroy the computer turning their distress into entertainment.

There they learn that the Joan played by Annie Murphy is already a fictional version of another woman. Their world is one layer in a chain of generated programmes, with each layer translating the actions below it into different performers. Joan smashes the computer because her original has already chosen to do so. In the physical world, the original Joan opens a coffee shop and becomes friends with Murphy. Both wear ankle monitors, sharing the consequences of ending the programme alongside their new freedom.
