Danny and Karl once shared a flat and spent late nights playing a fighting game while Danny's girlfriend Theo tried to sleep. Years later, Danny is married to Theo and raising their son. Karl returns for his birthday with a new version of Striking Vipers and equipment that lets players experience their fighters' bodies. Danny enters as Lance, Karl as Roxette, and a bout unexpectedly ends with a kiss.
Their startled withdrawal does not last. They meet again inside the game and begin a sexual relationship, leaving their physical bodies motionless in separate homes. Danny becomes less attentive to Theo, who asks whether his lack of interest means he is having an affair. He denies it but ends the sessions. Karl struggles to reproduce the experience with other partners and eventually uses another birthday invitation to ask Danny for one more meeting.
Danny and Karl kiss outside the game to test what their relationship means in their own bodies. They say they feel nothing, but their disagreement about continuing turns into a fight that brings police. Theo collects Danny, and he finally begins telling her the truth. A year later they have reached an arrangement that allows one annual exception to their marriage. Danny spends the night with Karl in the game, while Theo leaves her wedding ring behind and goes out to meet another man.
