Easy Company's recruits begin their paratrooper training at Camp Toccoa in Georgia under Captain Herbert Sobel. Repeated runs up Currahee Mountain, strict inspections and cancelled passes leave the men exhausted and angry. Sobel demands exact obedience over small details, while his executive officer, Richard Winters, encourages the soldiers through the work. The recruits learn to depend on each other as they prepare for a job that will put them behind enemy lines. Their resentment of Sobel becomes something they share alongside the physical demands of training.
Once the company moves closer to combat, Sobel's ability to lead in the field becomes a different problem. His mistakes during exercises undermine the men's trust, and his treatment of Winters deepens the dispute between the two officers. Winters accepts punishment without abandoning the company. Several noncommissioned officers take the much greater risk of telling their superiors that they will not follow Sobel into battle. Easy has learned the discipline he demanded, but its men doubt that he can make the decisions needed when lives are at stake.
Sobel is transferred away before Easy goes into action, leaving the men to prepare for the invasion under new command. On an English airfield, the company waits for confirmation that the operation will proceed. The training that has filled their days is over. They board the aircraft knowing that their next jump will carry them into occupied France.
