Season synopsis

After Azula’s lightning strike leaves Aang gravely wounded, the group hides aboard a captured Fire Nation ship, and the world believes the Avatar is dead. Zuko returns home as a celebrated prince but finds that his father’s approval does not resolve his doubts. Travelling through the Fire Nation in disguise, Aang and his friends prepare an invasion for a solar eclipse, but their enemy anticipates it and forces their retreat. During the Day of Black Sun, he confronts Ozai, rejects the war, and escapes after redirecting Ozai’s lightning. He later finds Aang at the Western Air Temple and asks to teach him firebending.
Zuko joins the group only after facing their distrust and explaining that he wants to help end the war. When his firebending falters, he and Aang seek the original teachers of the art: the dragons Ran and Shaw, who show them fire as life and energy rather than only destruction. The allies also rescue Sokka’s father and other prisoners from the Boiling Rock, while Katara confronts the soldier who killed her mother and chooses not to kill him. With Sozin’s Comet approaching, Zuko tells the others that Ozai intends to use its power to burn the Earth Kingdom.
Aang disappears while wrestling with whether he can defeat Ozai without killing him, then returns with a way to take away the Fire Lord’s bending. During the comet’s arrival, Ozai launches an airship assault on the Earth Kingdom. Sokka, Toph and Suki disable the fleet; Iroh and the White Lotus retake Ba Sing Se; and Zuko and Katara defeat Azula after she turns on her allies. Aang defeats Ozai and removes his firebending without taking his life. After the war, Zuko becomes Fire Lord and promises to help rebuild, while Aang and Katara share a kiss.
