Nam-ra stops Gwi-nam's attack and throws him from the roof after refusing to join him. The classmates have survived another encounter, but some now fear Nam-ra as well as their pursuer. At the quarantine camp, Jae-ik tells military command about Byeong-chan's laptop in the laboratory. Soldiers are sent to retrieve it, and their helicopter reaches the school while the stranded students signal from the roof, believing that rescue has finally arrived for them.
The soldiers begin preparing to evacuate the group after collecting the laptop. At the camp, however, Eun-ji attacks Cheol-su despite having passed the checks used to screen arrivals. Command concludes that a person can appear healthy while carrying the infection and cancels the school rescue. The students plead to be taken, but the soldier facing them refuses to carry out an order to shoot them. He fires into the air and departs with the research, leaving the students behind.
Park Eun-hee takes responsibility when questioned about helping So-ju escape, while he continues his journey through Hyosan. On the roof, rain gives the students water and changes what Nam-ra can hear and smell. They decide that the storm may also dull the zombies' senses enough to let them leave. Holding together, they cross back through the school and onto the grounds. Their attempt to escape stops when Cheong-san recognizes his infected mother among the figures outside.
