With Los Angeles spared, attention turns to the recording recovered from Syed Ali's hard drive. CTU's technical checks support its authenticity, but Ali denies ever meeting the officials heard on it. Michelle thinks his account deserves another look. Jack questions him before his transfer and reveals that the execution of Ali's son was staged. Ali repeats his denial, then a sniper kills him outside CTU before he can offer more information.
Jack reads the assassination as a possible attempt to protect a forged recording, while Tony suspects the countries it implicates. Their disagreement becomes personal, and Tony tells Jack to leave the investigation to CTU. Palmer is preparing a military response but agrees that Jack can seek hard proof. An unknown caller then claims responsibility for planting the recording and shooting Ali. He demands that Jack bring Kate Warner to a warehouse in exchange for evidence.
Michelle agrees to help Jack investigate even as Carrie watches their contact. Yusuf resents being asked for cooperation while CTU refuses to share what it knows. Elsewhere, Kim enters Frank Davies' convenience store hoping to use the bathroom and make a call. A man desperate to buy supplies forces his way inside. Kim tries to stop him with her gun, but he takes it from her. When Davies struggles for the weapon, it fires and wounds him.
