Build a Party of Seven Companions

On this page

Deadfire’s party is described as seven different companions you can recruit to join your quest, and each one can be assigned multiple classes and deeper abilities.

Seven companions, multiple classes each

A comparison of the two halves of Deadfire's party system: the roster of seven companions with multiple classes, and the relationships that unfold through the new companion system.

The store says you choose from seven different companions, and it pairs that with multiple classes and deeper abilities for each of them. That combination is what makes a small party configurable: the same companion can be pointed in a different direction on a second run through the game.

The companion system is new

Personal relationships and interactions unfold through a new companion system, and the store frames watching them as part of the experience. That matters for planning, because how you treat a companion becomes a decision with a result rather than flavour text you can skim on the way past.

A party is a shape

With classes multiplied and abilities assignable, the party’s shape is the thing worth thinking about: who covers what when a fight turns. The store also advertises meaningful choices at every turn, and the roster you assemble is one of those choices rather than a fixed hand.

The platform that carries the party is covered in plotting your own course by ship. How the fights themselves resolve is covered in trying the turn-based mode.
