Nioh 2 Getting Started: Survive the First Missions

Start with one exchange you understand
The first mission, The Village of Cursed Blossoms, is a lesson in how much Nioh 2 asks of your attention: yokai with long strings, humans who block, and a boss that punishes a greedy second swing. Rather than learning every combo, learn one safe exchange. Block or dodge a string you recognise, answer with a short attack, then leave with Ki still in the bar.
Ki supports attacks, dodges and blocks, and an empty bar prevents actions that require Ki. After a combo, watch the recoverable segment refill and press the Ki Pulse button within that window. Ki Pulse and Burst Counter goes through the timing in detail.
Pick a weapon whose basic attacks you can read at speed. Every weapon type can carry a first playthrough, and the training area lets you compare reach, recovery and Ki cost without committing upgrade materials.
Spend your first levels on purpose
Attributes affect several systems at once. Constitution raises Life, Heart raises Ki and Courage improves Ki recovery; Dexterity and Magic support Ninjutsu and Onmyo capacity. Early weapon scaling matters less than having enough Life and Ki to learn an encounter.
| If your problem is | Look at |
|---|---|
| Running out of Ki mid-combo | Heart, and shorter attack strings |
| Dying to one bad trade | Constitution, plus upgraded armour |
| Guard breaks constantly | More Ki, better guard values and shorter blocks |
| Bosses take too long | Weapon-relevant attack stats, and a second damage source |
Equipment weight determines agility. Stay below the load threshold for the agility tier you want; crossing a threshold changes movement and Ki use more than a small defence increase usually helps.
Build a supply line, not a grind
Shrines are checkpoints, levelling points and resupply stops. Pray at every one you pass. Finding Kodama in a region increases the minimum number of Elixirs replenished at shrines, so exploring side paths makes later attempts easier.
Two habits keep the early game manageable. Spend Amrita at the shrine rather than carrying a large unspent total into a boss, and arrange item shortcuts so healing and the tools you actually use are easy to reach.
