About the film
Contains story spoilers.
Ruben Fleischer’s Venom puts investigative reporter Eddie Brock in San Francisco, chasing stories about people harmed by powerful institutions. He lives with attorney Anne Weying, whose work defending the Life Foundation gives him access to confidential material about its human trials. Eddie uses what he learns to confront the company’s charismatic founder, Carlton Drake, during an interview, pushing beyond the questions he was permitted to ask. His decision costs both him and Anne their jobs; the professional blow becomes personal when Anne ends their engagement, leaving Eddie to discover how much of his confidence depended on the life they shared. The opening space mission provides a glimpse of the strange organisms before Eddie encounters one, connecting the newsroom investigation to a larger danger.
Months later, Dora Skirth, a Life Foundation scientist, contacts Eddie because she cannot accept Drake’s experiments. She helps him slip into the research facility, where he discovers that the alien organisms brought back from a space expedition are being paired with human test subjects. The symbiotes need living hosts, but the bond frequently kills those who cannot sustain it. During the break-in Eddie attempts to help Maria, one of the people being used in the trials; the symbiote inside her abandons her and bonds with Eddie instead. He escapes, but his body and senses begin to change. His public confrontation has consequences because he violates both journalistic trust and Anne's professional confidence, not simply because Drake retaliates against criticism.
The creature identifies itself as Venom and begins speaking inside Eddie’s head. It has a body capable of reshaping into armor, tendrils, and teeth, while Eddie’s new strength makes him a target when Drake’s security teams come after him. Their arrangement is not friendly at first: Venom sees humans as food and Eddie as a useful host, while Eddie tries to retain control of his own body. Their banter gives the transformation a comic dimension, but the physical cost remains real. Doctor Dan Lewis examines Eddie and warns that the symbiote is damaging his organs even as Venom insists it can keep him alive. Eddie's effort to save Maria makes the bond accidental and ethically messy: the rescue fails even as Eddie acquires the strength that will help him survive.
The symbiote’s bond can be disrupted by high-pitched sound and fire, weaknesses that make medical equipment unexpectedly dangerous. Anne takes Eddie to Dan after witnessing the transformation, and the examination reveals the damage inside his body. Venom insists it can reverse that harm, but an MRI separates the two, leaving Eddie exposed when Drake’s men capture him. Meanwhile, Riot moves between human hosts on its journey from Malaysia to San Francisco. Its search for Drake connects a scattered series of alien encounters to the company’s next launch, making the danger larger than Eddie’s struggle to get through a single day.
Drake accepts Riot’s plan to use the space probe to bring more symbiotes to Earth, treating humanity as a supply of potential hosts. Anne temporarily bonds with Venom to rescue Eddie from Drake’s men, returning the symbiote to him through a kiss. The reunion changes their bargain: Venom says it wants to remain with Eddie and protect Earth from its own species. Anne is no longer helping on trust alone, having experienced the bond herself. Eddie’s relationship with her has not simply been restored, but her intervention makes his survival possible while giving the reluctant partnership a shared purpose.
The climax unfolds around Life Foundation’s space probe as it prepares to launch. Anne helps Eddie and Venom return to the fight, while Riot, bonded with Drake, proves stronger and better armed than their improvised partnership. Venom damages the probe during its ascent; it explodes, killing Riot and Drake. Venom shields Eddie from the blast, though Anne believes the symbiote has died. Eddie survives and returns to reporting, while the pair secretly remain together and set rules for their arrangement, including Venom’s taste for eating criminals. The route from prison-like captivity to the launch site forces Eddie and Venom to depend on Anne, while the probe represents Drake's attempt to scale the experiment worldwide.
The film’s visual effects treat the symbiote as a material that can flow between silhouettes rather than a static suit. That fluidity makes Eddie’s struggle visible: Venom can erupt around him without warning, conceal him from attackers, or take control of his limbs. The changing relationship is also the story’s main source of humor, as Eddie tries to negotiate boundaries with a voice that can transform a private argument into a street fight. The theatrical ending gives their alliance a provisional everyday shape, then its mid-credits scene places Eddie in San Quentin to interview Cletus Kasady, setting up a new encounter without resolving it here. Even its last tease remains specific to Eddie's new work: he is back reporting, but his next interview takes him into a prison cell and a different kind of threat.
