About the film
Contains story spoilers.
The Mummy opens in ancient Thebes, where high priest Imhotep’s affair with Anck-su-namun becomes a crime against Pharaoh Seti I. They kill the ruler, but when the Medjai guard arrives, Anck-su-namun takes her own life to give Imhotep a chance to escape. He and his priests carry her body to Hamunaptra, hoping to bring her back. The attempt is interrupted: the priests are mummified alive, and Imhotep is buried with scarabs that eat through his flesh. The Medjai swear to keep him sealed away. Centuries later, the film shifts to Cairo in 1926, when a small box and map unexpectedly give a young librarian a route to the city everyone treats as a legend.
Evelyn Carnahan works among books and artifacts at the Cairo museum, but her ambition to become a field Egyptologist has little outlet. Her brother Jonathan arrives with a box he stole from Rick O’Connell, an American adventurer who says he found Hamunaptra while serving with the French Foreign Legion. Evelyn bargains with a prison warden to free Rick, who agrees to lead them to the ruins. The group includes Jonathan and the prison warden, who expects a share of the treasure, and they soon find themselves racing a richer American expedition led by Beni, Rick’s former comrade. Rick knows the desert and its dangers; Evelyn brings scholarly knowledge and a willingness to handle the artifacts herself, while Jonathan’s appetite for treasure complicates their plans.
At Hamunaptra, warnings from Ardeth Bay, a Medjai leader, do not stop either expedition from digging. The Americans uncover the Book of the Dead and canopic jars; Rick, Evelyn and Jonathan discover Imhotep’s wrapped remains. Evelyn sneaks into the rival camp at night to read from the book, not knowing that the words will awaken him. The mummy begins to move, and the explorers flee as the site becomes a fight between frightened outsiders and an ancient force returning to strength. Beni survives by speaking Hebrew, which gives Imhotep a use for him. The expedition’s curiosity has changed the terms of the trip: the treasure hunt is now an attempt to contain a curse the Medjai have guarded for centuries.
Back in Cairo, Imhotep follows the explorers and brings a series of plagues upon the city. He hunts down members of the American party who found the Book of the Dead, using their deaths to regain his human form and power. Rick, Evelyn and Jonathan search the museum for answers and meet Ardeth there; Dr. Bey, whom they know as the museum curator, is revealed to be another Medjai. The group works out that Imhotep intends to use Evelyn as a sacrifice to resurrect Anck-su-namun. Their only countermeasure is the Book of Amun-Ra, which can make Imhotep mortal. The discovery turns the mission into a rescue, but the adversary gets to them first: Evelyn is captured while Dr. Bey gives his life to help the others escape.
Rick and Jonathan enlist Winston Havelock, Rick’s old pilot friend, to fly them and Ardeth back to Hamunaptra. Imhotep sends a sandstorm against the plane, and Winston dies in the crash. The survivors make the rest of the journey on foot, with Ardeth confronting Imhotep’s resurrected servants while Rick and Jonathan search for the book. Jonathan reads from it to control the guards in the ritual chamber, and Rick reaches Evelyn in time to free her. She uses the Book of Amun-Ra to strip Imhotep of his immortality. Once vulnerable, he can be stabbed, and Rick kills him as he returns to a decaying corpse. The climax depends on Evelyn’s knowledge and Jonathan’s ability to use the book, while Rick supplies the physical courage that gets them into the chamber.
The danger does not end with Imhotep. Beni has spent the crisis stealing treasure, and his latest attempt triggers a trap that starts the ancient city collapsing. Rick, Evelyn and Jonathan race out as the ruins break apart; Beni is trapped and eaten by scarabs. Outside, the three discover that Ardeth survived the battle and say goodbye before leaving with some of the plunder Beni gathered. The conclusion restores the group’s travel-adventure rhythm after a story that has repeatedly turned knowledge into risk. Evelyn has gone from being treated as an unlikely passenger to the person whose command of the books decides how the final confrontation can end.
The film blends a 1920s archaeological adventure with supernatural horror and broad physical comedy. Its central crew has different motives: Evelyn wants access to a past she can study, Rick wants to survive and protect Evelyn more than acquire another artifact, Jonathan sees opportunities for profit, and Ardeth protects a duty handed down through generations. Imhotep’s return is tied to grief and devotion, but the ritual he seeks would cost Evelyn her life. That personal conflict keeps the mythology legible even as the story moves from Cairo streets to desert ruins and a collapsing underground chamber. The adventure remains the film’s own fantasy, with invented characters and curses arranged around Egypt as its setting.
