About the film

Contains story spoilers.

The film opens on Isla Sorna, the abandoned InGen site where dinosaurs were bred before being transferred to the original park. A young girl from a visiting British family wanders away from their yacht and is attacked by small Compsognathus, an incident that helps InGen executive Peter Ludlow remove his uncle John Hammond from company control. Ludlow plans to turn the island’s creatures into a new attraction in San Diego. Hammond, now sidelined, wants the animals documented and left alone, so he recruits mathematician Ian Malcolm to lead an observation team.

Ian is reluctant because his girlfriend, paleontologist Sarah Harding, has already gone to the island. He agrees to travel there with equipment specialist Eddie Carr and documentarian Nick Van Owen, intending first to bring Sarah back. They find her studying the animals and discover Ian’s daughter Kelly has secretly stowed away in the research trailer. Their group has limited equipment and no safe perimeter; the island’s overgrown facilities and freely moving animals make observation itself a risk. Ian’s immediate family concern sits alongside Hammond’s larger aim of showing that the creatures exist beyond a controlled park.

Ludlow’s capture team arrives with mercenaries and hunters led by Roland Tembo and Ajay Sidhu. Their methods sharply contrast with the researchers: the team traps dinosaurs in a prepared clearing, while Sarah and Nick seek to study them without treating them as cargo. Nick releases the captured animals, causing them to stampede through the InGen camp. During the disruption, he finds an injured young Tyrannosaurus and brings it back to the trailer. Roland had used the infant as bait to draw its father, and caring for it now risks attracting the adults directly to the group.

Ian takes Kelly to safety and returns to warn Sarah and Nick. They treat the young dinosaur, but its parents track the scent and arrive at the trailer. The adults reclaim their infant and push the trailer partly over a cliff. Eddie reaches the site with a rope and attempts to pull the trailer back using his SUV. The Tyrannosaurs return during Eddie’s rescue attempt; they tear into his vehicle and kill him. Ian, Sarah and Nick are later rescued by Ludlow’s team, but the rival groups have lost communication equipment and must work together to reach an abandoned InGen base.

The mixed party sets up a camp and is followed by the adult Tyrannosaurs, drawn by the infant’s blood on Sarah’s jacket. The people flee through long grass, where velociraptors attack and kill Ajay and most of the hunting team. Ian’s group reaches the base and radios for helicopter extraction. Nick reveals that he stole Roland’s bullets to stop him killing a dinosaur for a trophy; Roland has instead used tranquilizers on the male. Their different ideas of what a successful expedition means remain visible even after survival becomes the immediate priority.

At the port in San Diego, Ian and Sarah try to stop Ludlow’s plan, but the ship carrying the adult Tyrannosaurus crashes at the docks. The crew is dead and the animal escapes into the city, where it moves through streets and residential areas. Ian and Sarah locate the infant at the unfinished attraction and use it to draw the adult back toward the cargo hold. Ludlow tries to seize the infant and is incapacitated by the adult, which leaves him to its young. Sarah tranquilizes the adult and Ian closes the hold, stopping the immediate danger without turning the city into a working dinosaur park.

The surviving dinosaurs are returned to Isla Sorna under Navy escort, and Hammond calls for the island’s creatures to be left undisturbed. Ian, Sarah and Kelly watch the announcement, as the ending returns to the Tyrannosaur family and flying reptiles on the island. The ending resolves the conflict over capture by placing the animals back on the island, though the people have seen how difficult it is to enforce that boundary. Spielberg frames the story around two human approaches—collecting living specimens for commercial display and observing them in their habitat—while the animals repeatedly disrupt both groups’ plans.

Kelly has a more active place in the expedition than Ian’s efforts to keep her safe initially suggest. At the abandoned buildings, her gymnastics training becomes a means of fighting back against a raptor threatening her father. The reversal gives their strained relationship a practical change: the daughter he wants to remove from danger is capable of helping him survive it. Elsewhere, the trailer’s breaking glass, ropes and shifting weight make rescue a problem of seconds rather than an abstract argument about whether the island is dangerous. People can be scientifically informed, physically skilled and well equipped, yet still have to improvise when the setting destroys the assumptions behind their plans. The island’s human conflict is also visible in Roland’s changing position. He joins Ludlow’s expedition as a hunter seeking a challenging trophy, but Nick’s theft of his bullets prevents the planned kill. When the male Tyrannosaur is sedated and taken to the mainland, Roland declines Ludlow’s offer to work at the park, reflecting on Ajay’s death and the damage the scheme has caused. That choice gives the hunting party a consequence beyond its immediate survival: even a skilled hunter can decide that the commercial spectacle is no longer worth pursuing.
