About the film

Contains story spoilers.

Panem is a nation divided between the wealthy Capitol and districts whose labor keeps it running. Every year, each district must send one girl and one boy to the Hunger Games, a televised contest in which the teenagers are expected to kill one another until one remains. In District 12, Katniss Everdeen supports her family by hunting outside the fences with her friend Gale. When her younger sister Prim is selected for the 74th Games, Katniss volunteers immediately. Peeta Mellark, a baker’s son who once gave Katniss bread when her family was hungry, is chosen as the boy tribute. Their history complicates a competition the Capitol wants to present as entertainment.

Haymitch Abernathy, District 12’s only living victor, accompanies them to the Capitol and becomes their mentor. Public appearances matter because sponsors can send supplies into the arena, so Katniss and Peeta are coached to perform for the cameras as well as prepare for danger. Stylist Cinna gives Katniss a striking fire-themed look, and Caesar Flickerman interviews them before the Games. Peeta says that he has loved Katniss for years. She initially reads the confession as a strategy to win sympathy and sponsors, but the film lets the statement become more complicated once she sees how much Peeta’s feelings are not simply an act. The Capitol’s polished pageantry is the opposite of District 12’s scarcity.

When the arena opens, many tributes are killed in a rush for weapons and supplies at the Cornucopia. Katniss grabs a small pack and runs into the forest. The trained Career tributes have trained for the event and quickly become a threat; Peeta appears to be allied with them. Rue helps Katniss spot a nest of tracker jackers hanging above the Careers. Katniss drops it on them, retrieves Glimmer’s bow and arrows, then escapes while suffering from the venom. After recovering, she and Rue plan a diversion: Rue draws the Careers away while Katniss reaches their stockpile and destroys it with mines.

Rue is caught by Marvel, one of the Careers, and Katniss arrives too late to prevent him from killing her. Katniss shoots Marvel, then covers Rue’s body with flowers before leaving. The gesture reaches viewers in the districts and hints at dissent against the Capitol’s spectacle. Soon after, the rule changes so two tributes from the same district may win if both survive. Katniss finds Peeta badly wounded and camouflaged near a stream, then helps him hide in a cave. When a feast promises medicine for each district, she goes to the Cornucopia; Clove ambushes her, but Thresh kills Clove and spares Katniss because of Rue. Katniss returns with medicine, and Peeta’s leg begins to heal.

As the remaining tributes are driven toward the Cornucopia, mutated creatures released by the Gamemakers force them into a final confrontation. Cato grabs Peeta as a shield on top of the structure. Katniss shoots Cato’s hand, allowing Peeta to shove him toward the creatures below. Katniss shoots Cato again to end his suffering as the creatures attack him. The two-victor rule is then revoked, leaving Katniss and Peeta as the last pair. They prepare to eat poisonous nightlock berries together; the Gamemakers stop them and announce two winners rather than lose both to the Capitol’s own rules.

Katniss and Peeta return to District 12 as co-winners, but the victory has made the Capitol’s control more precarious. Haymitch warns Katniss that her public actions can be interpreted as a challenge, and their public appearance as a couple now carries consequences beyond the arena. President Snow sees the threatened double suicide as a challenge to his authority, and the film ends with Katniss and Peeta celebrated in public while facing an uncertain private future. The contest is over, but the story makes clear that surviving its arena does not mean surviving the politics that created it. Seneca Crane is left alone in a locked room with nightlock berries, a punishment that exposes the cost of displeasing Snow even for someone who helped stage the Games.

The film repeatedly cuts from Katniss in the woods to the Capitol’s controlled viewing spaces. Sponsor gifts, costumes and interviews are part of the contest because the tributes are being packaged for an audience as well as hunted. Haymitch has to turn Katniss’s bluntness into something viewers will support, while Effie and Cinna approach the spectacle from very different positions inside Capitol culture. Once the arena begins, the Gamemakers can alter conditions and rules without warning. Katniss’s bow skills keep her alive, but her choices to honor Rue and protect Peeta make the televised story harder for the Capitol to control.

Katniss’s first impressions of Peeta are filtered through the stakes of survival. He once helped her with bread, but now the Capitol expects them to compete until one kills the other. When he publicly declares his love, Katniss worries that the story could make her vulnerable or useful to a sponsor. The movie gradually reframes that interview as a mix of genuine feeling and survival strategy. Their cave scenes allow them to speak beyond the camera’s pageant, while the approaching feast forces Katniss to put Peeta’s physical survival ahead of the careful distance she has tried to keep.
