About the film

Contains story spoilers.

The opening belongs to Gwen Stacy. In her dimension, the death of her friend Peter Parker still shapes her distance from her father, police captain George Stacy. A multiverse incursion brings her into conflict with Vulture; Spider-Woman Jessica Drew and Miguel O’Hara arrive to help. George corners Gwen during the confrontation, and she reveals her identity to him. He attempts to arrest her, so Gwen leaves rather than remain in a city where her father sees her as a criminal. Her section establishes the film’s emotional concern: the mask can connect people, but secrecy strains ordinary relationships.

In Brooklyn, Miles is more practiced as Spider-Man but no more able to be in two places at once. His parents, Rio and Jefferson, are trying to understand their son’s evasiveness and his uncertain plans for college. At the same time, Miles chases the Spot, a former scientist covered in black portals that let him move objects and himself through space. The villain’s early appearances are awkward and comic; Miles treats him as a nuisance who falls through doorways and steals small items. But the Spot’s portals connect to the collider accident from the first film, and his power begins to grow as he travels across dimensions.

Gwen returns to Miles’s universe while pursuing the Spot. Their reunion feels easy until the action pulls them apart again, this time into a city populated by Spider-People. Miles follows them into Mumbattan, where he meets Pavitr Prabhakar, Spider-Man India, and becomes involved in a rescue during the Spot’s attack. The scene combines an exuberant new setting with a growing problem: the Spot can create holes in the world, and his resentment toward Miles makes the conflict personal. Miles also disrupts an event Miguel’s organisation considers essential, saving police captain Singh as a city begins to collapse around him.

Miguel argues that the multiverse depends on recurring “canon events,” painful moments that Spider-People must experience in order for their worlds to remain intact. He points to the death of a close police captain as one such event and believes Miles’s intervention may destroy a universe. The film presents this claim through Miguel’s authority and the Spider Society’s scale, but it also shows the cost of accepting his rule without question. Miles hears that his father Jefferson is expected to die in a future confrontation with the Spot and refuses to treat that prediction as a moral command. Gwen, who has formed bonds with the group, is caught between the people she cares for and the institution she has joined.

The Spider Society headquarters turns the multiverse into a busy working environment. Spider-People move through its corridors, training spaces and monitoring systems, with different costumes and comic traditions sharing the same frame. Miles becomes an anomaly under Miguel’s theory: the spider that bit him came from another universe, and Miguel believes Miles was never meant to become Spider-Man in his own. Rather than submit to capture, Miles escapes through a vast pursuit involving hundreds of Spider-People. Hobie Brown, Spider-Punk, quietly helps him, while Gwen’s loyalties fracture when Miguel expels her from the group and sends her home. There, Gwen and George reconcile; she learns he has quit his captain role, undercutting Miguel’s certainty that her father must die as a canon event.

Miles reaches what he believes is his Brooklyn, only to learn he has landed in Earth-42, the dimension from which the spider that bit him originally came. That world has no Spider-Man. His counterpart is not the friendly neighbourhood hero he expected: another Miles has become the Prowler, and he restrains the visiting Miles. The choice of where to end the film makes the difference between realities immediate and unsettling. The sequence is a reveal and a predicament, not a resolution; the story does not show a rescue, a return home or a finished confrontation between the two Mileses.

The film’s animation uses distinct visual systems as part of its storytelling. Gwen’s universe shifts between soft pastel washes that change with her emotional state, while Miguel’s future headquarters has harder lines and a more controlled palette. Mumbattan is dense with colour and movement, and the Spot’s growing portals turn empty space into a compositional force. The film can alter line work, rendering and frame rhythm as characters cross into new realities, then let comic lettering and graphic marks occupy the image. These choices help keep an enormous cast and a rapid stream of locations legible while giving each character a visual point of view.

Across the Spider-Verse closes on simultaneous separation and unfinished motion. Gwen is back in her own world, reconciled with her father and assembling allies who understand why Miles needs help. Miles is trapped in a dimension where his counterpart is the Prowler; Miguel remains committed to a system Miles has rejected. The Spot’s threat is still active, and the predicted danger to Jefferson has not been settled. The story stops at this Earth-42 predicament, leaving the characters’ next choices and the multiverse’s fate unresolved. Its final beat is a cliff-edge turn in Miles’s journey, while Gwen’s changed relationship with George shows that the future Miguel called fixed may not be inevitable.
