About the film

Contains story spoilers.

Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 begins after Tony Stark has publicly identified himself as Iron Man. The revelation turns his armor into a national-security debate, with the government and rival contractor Justin Hammer arguing it should not remain in private hands. Tony refuses to surrender it, treating the suit as both responsibility and extension of his identity. He names Pepper Potts CEO of Stark Industries, while the palladium core in his chest reactor is poisoning him. His public confidence masks a medical countdown he cannot solve through bravado.

In Russia, Ivan Vanko watches footage of Tony’s confession and builds an arc reactor using knowledge inherited from his father, Anton, a former Stark Industries colleague of Howard Stark. Ivan travels to Monaco and attacks Tony during a race with electrified whips. Tony dons an armor case and defeats him, but Ivan’s assault shows Stark technology can be recreated and turned against its maker. Hammer visits Ivan in custody and secretly arranges his escape, hoping to use the engineer to build weapons that will make Hammer competitive with Stark. The briefcase armor gives Tony a portable answer to the attack, but the racecourse still exposes the limits of controlling a machine in public. Spectators and television cameras turn a private grievance into an international demonstration. Ivan does not need to win the fight to show that Tony’s claim to an unmatched technology is vulnerable, and Hammer sees an opportunity in that exposed weakness.

Tony’s condition worsens as he uses the armor and hides how sick he has become. At his birthday party, intoxicated Tony wears the suit recklessly and fights with James Rhodes, who takes another armor and leaves. Natasha Romanoff, introduced as an employee at Stark Industries, is secretly working for S.H.I.E.L.D. Nick Fury intervenes and gives Tony a box of Howard’s materials, including a model for a new element. The message requires Tony to reconstruct the Stark Expo model and solve the design hidden within it. He discovers an alternative reactor element, giving him a chance to survive without palladium.

Hammer unveils armored drones at the Stark Expo, along with a suit piloted by Rhodes. Ivan takes control of the machines and turns the event into an attack. Rhodes’s armor is remotely hijacked, forcing Tony to fight his friend before Natasha and Happy reach Hammer’s facility and disable the override. Tony and Rhodes then work together against the drones and face Ivan, who has armed himself with explosives. The battle ends with Vanko triggering the destruction of his remaining machines and himself. In the chaos, Tony rescues Pepper; their kiss gives their relationship a direct resolution after a film of deflection and work-related tension.

Rhodes keeps the War Machine armor rather than returning it. Fury tells Tony that S.H.I.E.L.D. will use him as a consultant, based on Natasha’s evaluation, while withholding a place on the Avengers team. Senator Stern later presents medals to Tony and Rhodes. The film’s post-credits scene follows Agent Coulson to New Mexico, where he discovers a hammer in a crater. That visual link, not a news report, points toward the next story beyond Tony’s Expo crisis.

The Expo is an inheritance Tony can display before he knows how to understand it. Howard’s recorded message initially resembles corporate promotion, but the material Fury supplies reveals a father speaking toward a future his son will inhabit. Tony turns the physical model into a diagram, works with J.A.R.V.I.S. to identify the structure and builds the equipment needed to synthesise the new element. The film gives engineering its own chain of discovery instead of treating the cure as a gift handed over by S.H.I.E.L.D. Ivan’s workshop follows a competing route: he has inherited knowledge and a grievance, then gains access to Hammer’s resources. Hammer believes he is commissioning a product that will improve his public standing, while Ivan quietly changes the terms by building unmanned machines. Their uneasy partnership adds comedy through Hammer’s salesmanship and Ivan’s resistance to being managed. The contrast becomes destructive at the Expo, where a polished demonstration conceals an attack. Rhodes’s heavily armed suit belongs to that display before its remote control turns him into an unwilling opponent. Restoring his control matters as much as improving Tony’s reactor, because the two men can only fight effectively once they are acting together again.

Iron Man 2 is also about inheriting unfinished conflicts. Tony confronts Anton Vanko’s grievance and Howard’s influence, while Rhodes and Pepper make his responsibilities concrete. Hammer wants to copy the armor without understanding its maker; Ivan understands the technology but uses it as revenge. Their motives converge at the Expo, where a celebration of invention becomes a threat. The film ends with Tony alive and more connected to his allies, but the Avengers briefing signals that the scale of his future problems is about to widen.
