About the film

Contains story spoilers.

Alfonso Cuarón’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban opens with Harry practicing magic privately at the Dursleys’ house. When Aunt Marge insults his parents, his anger causes her to inflate and float away. Harry runs from home expecting punishment, but the Knight Bus takes him to the Leaky Cauldron, where Minister Fudge allows him to stay without expulsion. There he learns that Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban and is believed to be coming after him. Harry does not yet know why the story of Black is tied so closely to his parents. He heads back to Hogwarts carrying that fear, while the Dementors sent to guard the school make his past feel physically present.

On the Hogwarts Express, a Dementor boards the train and Harry collapses when it approaches. Professor Lupin, the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, drives it away and later begins teaching Harry how to resist the creatures with a Patronus. The threat affects more than one student: the Dementors are meant to catch Black, but their presence changes the atmosphere around the school. Meanwhile Hagrid starts teaching Care of Magical Creatures. His first class with the hippogriff Buckbeak ends badly when Draco Malfoy provokes the animal and is injured. Draco’s father uses his influence to have Buckbeak sentenced to death, making Hagrid’s early attempt at teaching a source of legal danger as well as a moment of wonder.

Harry cannot visit Hogsmeade because he lacks permission from his guardians. Fred and George give him the Marauder’s Map, which shows hidden passages and the movement of people around Hogwarts. During an unapproved visit, Harry overhears adults discussing Sirius: they say he was the Potters’ friend, betrayed them to Voldemort and killed their mutual friend Peter Pettigrew. Harry’s understanding of Black hardens into a wish for revenge. The map has given him access to places he is not supposed to go, but the information he hears is still only one account. The film lets a mystery form through partial explanations, and the viewer experiences the same uncertainty Harry does as the adults’ claims make his godfather sound irredeemable.

The Fat Lady’s portrait is slashed, and she claims Black has entered the castle. A Dementor attack during a Quidditch match destroys Harry’s broom, increasing his fear that he cannot defend himself. Later, Harry, Ron and Hermione hear the executioner’s axe fall as they hide nearby, but they do not see Buckbeak die. A large black dog drags Ron through a passage beneath the Whomping Willow; Harry and Hermione follow to the Shrieking Shack, where the dog becomes Sirius Black. Lupin joins him and reveals that they were friends at school. The confrontation changes the story’s central question: the accused man is not trying to kill Harry, and the history Harry heard in the pub may have concealed as much as it explained.

Lupin and Black identify Ron’s rat Scabbers as Peter Pettigrew, a former friend who faked his death and betrayed Harry’s parents. They bring him back to human form and explain that Black was framed. Their effort to expose Pettigrew is interrupted when the full moon transforms Lupin into a werewolf. In the chaos Pettigrew escapes, and Black is injured while fighting Lupin in his dog form. Harry and Black are then attacked by Dementors near the lake. Harry falls unconscious, and Black is captured again before his innocence can be made public. The truth has been revealed to a small group, but without Pettigrew in custody, it cannot easily change the official story.

In the hospital wing, Dumbledore suggests that Harry and Hermione use her Time-Turner to return to the earlier events of the night. Their second pass lets them see how their actions already fit into it. They rescue Buckbeak before the execution; the axe the trio heard earlier struck a pumpkin as the hippogriff escaped. They then free Black from the tower where the Dementors are waiting. Harry recognizes that the powerful Patronus that saved him and Black earlier was his own, cast from the other side of time. Black escapes on Buckbeak, while Lupin later resigns from Hogwarts. The rescue offers hope without publicly clearing Black’s name, since Pettigrew is still free and the Ministry still believes its original account.

Cuarón’s film shifts the series toward a more atmospheric visual rhythm. Weather, shadows and the movement of the camera make Hogwarts feel less like a sealed school and more like a place exposed to seasons and danger. The Dementors are introduced through Harry’s bodily reaction rather than an explanation of their history, and the time loop is built from repeated views of the same scenes. The adaptation also leaves out or compresses material from Rowling’s novel, including much of the Marauders’ backstory. Its central emotional change comes from Harry learning that inheritance is not only a story told about his parents; he has to judge that story against what people actually do when given the chance to protect one another.
