About the film

Contains story spoilers.

The Guardians have become famous enough to take paid jobs, but their teamwork is still fragile. At the start, they protect valuable batteries from an interdimensional creature for the Sovereign, while Baby Groot dances in the foreground of the battle. Rocket secretly steals some of the batteries, provoking the Sovereign to attack their ship with drones. A mysterious figure destroys the pursuers, and the Guardians crash on Berhert. The stranger is Ego, Peter Quill’s father, who invites Peter, Gamora, and Drax to his planet with his empathic companion Mantis. Rocket and Groot stay behind with Nebula to repair the ship, splitting the team just as Peter’s family history opens up.

The Sovereign hires Yondu and his Ravager crew to recapture the Guardians. Yondu hesitates to hand over Peter, whom he raised after taking him from Earth, and the hesitation exposes old resentments among the crew. Taserface leads a mutiny, Nebula helps by shooting Yondu, and the loyal crew members are killed. Rocket and Yondu are imprisoned, but Kraglin, remorseful about the coup, helps Groot free them. They escape after fighting their way through the ship and destroying it. Meanwhile, Nebula heads for Gamora, still blaming her sister for the abuse Thanos inflicted on her. Across these threads, the film explores families formed by blood, adoption, rivalry, and survival.

On Ego’s planet, Peter learns that his father is a Celestial who shaped a humanoid body to explore the universe. Ego teaches Peter to use the power he inherited and describes his search for a purpose. Mantis grows close to Drax and tries to warn him about Ego’s intentions. Nebula attacks Gamora, but the sisters eventually reconcile enough to explore a cavern filled with remains. They discover that Ego has killed his other children after learning they did not inherit his Celestial power. Peter learns the crucial truth when Ego admits he gave Peter’s mother Meredith the brain tumor that killed her. The revelation breaks the spell of a promised family reunion and turns Peter against him.

Ego activates seedlings planted on thousands of worlds, which begin to grow and consume them. He uses Peter’s energy to help power the expansion, Rocket, Yondu, Groot, and Kraglin reach the planet, joining the companions already there in the effort to rescue him. The Guardians travel to Ego’s brain at the planet’s core, where Yondu explains that he kept Peter from Ego to protect him. Rocket builds a bomb from the stolen batteries, and Groot is entrusted to plant it. Peter uses his newly awakened power to hold Ego’s attention while the others escape, turning the last fight into a coordinated effort rather than another solo rescue.

The bomb destroys Ego and the planet, but Peter loses his Celestial abilities in the process. Yondu saves him by giving Peter the single protective suit available and accepting that he will die in the vacuum. Peter recognizes Yondu’s sacrifice as the act of a father who loved him, despite their years of conflict. The Guardians hold a funeral as Ravager ships arrive, honoring Yondu and welcoming him back into their community. Nebula leaves to pursue Thanos, while Mantis joins the Guardians. The closing scenes let grief and renewed belonging coexist: Peter loses the powerful parent he has just met, but understands the care of the man who raised him.

Music is one of Peter's remaining connections to Meredith, so Ego's destruction of his Walkman is an assault on something more intimate than a possession. The songs Peter carries belong to the life and parent he lost, while Ego asks him to trade that attachment for cosmic purpose. Kraglin's gift of a Zune gives him another way to keep listening without recovering the original object. The opening battle has already made the soundtrack part of the film's humor through Groot's dancing. Later uses let the same musical habit carry memory and mourning, keeping Peter's enormous new powers connected to a recognizably small human inheritance.

Nebula explains that Thanos made the sisters compete and replaced parts of her body when she lost. Gamora's victories therefore meant something very different to the sister forced to live with their consequences. What initially appears to be simple jealousy becomes a record of abuse that neither sister can understand only from her own position. Their confrontation does not produce instant ease, but it allows them to recognize who arranged the rivalry. Karen Gillan's guarded Nebula and Zoe Saldaña's more openly determined Gamora give that recognition friction. The reconciliation matters without erasing Nebula's anger or making her future pursuit of Thanos disappear.

The Sovereign turn their attack into a remotely controlled operation, with pilots treating lost craft much like lost attempts in a game. Their protected position differs sharply from the Guardians' damaged ship and the bodies exposed when things go wrong. Rocket's provocation has consequences the whole group must share, even when he presents it as a joke. Yondu recognizes a similar habit of pushing others away, which gives their confinement a conversation beneath the escape plot. Mantis brings a different vulnerability: she can sense feelings but has spent her life serving Ego. Joining this unruly group offers her a possibility of companionship that his carefully made world never supplied.
