About the film
Contains story spoilers.
The Eternals arrive on Earth in antiquity aboard the starship Domo, sent by the Celestial Arishem to destroy the Deviants. Their ten members—Sersi, Ikaris, Ajak, Kingo, Sprite, Phastos, Makkari, Druig, Gilgamesh and Thena—possess distinct abilities, but they are also told not to interfere in human conflicts. When the last Deviants appear defeated in 1521, the team disperses. Centuries of separate lives follow, and the film introduces the group in fragments across different periods rather than treating their long shared past as a single flashback. Their time among people has produced attachments and disagreements that their original mission did not anticipate.
In the present, Sersi and Sprite live in London. Sersi has built a life with human Dane Whitman after Ikaris disappeared from her life centuries earlier. A Deviant attacks them, and Ikaris arrives to drive it away. The attack convinces Sersi that the old threat has returned. She, Sprite and Ikaris travel to South Dakota to find their leader Ajak, only to discover that she has been killed. Ajak has chosen Sersi as her successor, giving her the ability to communicate with Arishem. The transfer is more than a change of command: it lets Sersi learn the purpose hidden behind the history that has shaped all ten of them.
Arishem tells Sersi that Earth’s population has grown enough to allow a new Celestial, Tiamut, to emerge from the planet. The birth will destroy Earth, and the Eternals’ real mission has been to prepare the world for that event. The Deviants were originally sent to remove apex predators and let intelligent life develop, but evolved and began hunting the populations themselves. The Eternals were created to stop them. Their past campaign was one phase in a much larger process that treats worlds as vessels for Celestials. The discovery changes the group’s question from how to defeat monsters to whether their creator’s plan deserves obedience.
Sersi gathers the others, and they meet at Druig’s settlement in the Amazon. A renewed Deviant attack kills Gilgamesh, whose bond with Thena has helped steady her after she suffered from Mahd Wy’ry, a condition that disrupts her memories. Phastos proposes combining their powers through a Uni-Mind, which might let Druig put Tiamut to sleep before the Emergence. Ikaris resists because he remains loyal to Arishem. He reveals that Ajak wanted to stop the destruction, and that he led her to the Deviants, allowing them to kill her. Sprite sides with him out of her attachment to Ikaris; Kingo leaves rather than fight friends he disagrees with.
The group reaches the emergence site, an active volcano in the Indian Ocean. Makkari has found the location, while Druig attempts to use his power to put the developing Celestial to sleep. Ikaris and Sprite try to prevent the others from acting, but Ikaris interrupts Druig’s attempt, Druig later knocks out Sprite, and Phastos restrains Ikaris. Thena kills Kro, the Deviant who killed Gilgamesh. Druig’s plan fails, and Sersi tries to turn Tiamut to stone. Ikaris breaks free and moves to stop her, but cannot bring himself to kill the woman he loves. He joins the Uni-Mind instead, and Sersi receives enough strength to petrify the emerging Celestial, saving Earth while leaving Tiamut’s body visible above the sea.
Guilt overwhelms Ikaris after the choice, and he flies into the Sun. Sersi uses the remaining Uni-Mind power to make Sprite human, ending the childlike form in which she has been trapped. The immediate crisis ends, but Arishem appears and takes Sersi, Kingo and Phastos away to judge humanity and assess their memories. In a mid-credits scene, Thena, Makkari and Druig meet Eros and Pip, who offer help. The story closes with the Eternals divided again by a force beyond their control, while their own decisions have changed the mission that once united them.
Chloé Zhao’s direction uses varied landscapes and natural settings to give the cosmic premise a physical scale. The film moves from ancient settings to present-day London, Mumbai and the Amazon, often letting the group’s abilities appear in relation to ordinary human spaces. Sersi’s transformation power is quiet and tactile; Ikaris’s flight and heat vision are a direct force rather than an abstract symbol. The large ensemble means individual histories surface in short encounters and shifts of alliance. Its central tension comes from that accumulation: the characters have spent centuries with humanity, and the truth of their assignment cannot erase what they have learned from living among people.
The long timeline makes loyalty feel different for each member. Sersi’s work among people has made human lives immediate to her; Ikaris has preserved his allegiance to Arishem even while his love for Sersi complicates it. Kingo’s decision to leave the final conflict shows a third response: he agrees with Ikaris about the Emergence but will not attack the friends trying to prevent it. The film’s time jumps let these positions accumulate over centuries rather than appear as last-minute arguments. Their powers are spectacular, but the final choice is not settled by strength alone. Whether they act together depends on what each has learned during the long interval when they were told to wait and remain separate.
