About the film

Contains story spoilers.

Aquaman opens at a lighthouse on the Maine coast, where keeper Thomas Curry rescues Atlanna, queen of Atlantis, during a storm. Their life together produces Arthur, a child able to communicate with sea creatures, but Atlantean soldiers eventually find her. She returns to Atlantis to protect Thomas and Arthur, leaving the boy with the promise that she will come back when it is safe. Her adviser Vulko secretly trains Arthur in Atlantean combat. Arthur grows into a public figure known as Aquaman, yet the news that Atlantis executed his mother for loving a human hardens his refusal to claim its throne.

The present-day conflict begins when Arthur confronts pirates who have hijacked a submarine. Their leader, Jesse Kane, is trapped aboard the damaged submarine; Arthur refuses to save him after Jesse’s crew has killed innocent people, and Jesse dies. His son David turns that loss into a personal vendetta and later becomes Black Manta. Meanwhile, Orm, Arthur’s younger half-brother and the new king of Atlantis, argues that pollution and violence from the surface justify an underwater war. He persuades King Nereus of Xebel to join him and stages a submarine attack that appears to prove the surface is threatening Atlantis, using David and the repaired vessel to strengthen his case.

Mera, Nereus’s daughter and Orm’s intended bride, refuses to support the plan and seeks Arthur’s help. A tidal wave sent by Orm strikes the coast, and Mera saves Thomas, giving Arthur a direct reason to enter the ocean kingdom he has avoided. Vulko tells him that finding the Trident of Atlan, the first ruler of Atlantis, would establish his right to rule. Arthur is captured and forced into a duel with Orm, who blames him for Atlanna’s supposed death. Mera rescues Arthur, and the two leave together to follow clues toward the weapon. Their alliance is practical at first: she understands Atlantean politics, while Arthur has little interest in a crown but cannot ignore the danger posed to his father and the surface.

Their route takes them first to the Sahara, where they explore the remains of the lost Kingdom of the Deserters and uncover a message that points to Sicily. There, Arthur and Mera search for the next clue among ancient architecture and crowded streets, while Orm’s men pursue them. The film turns the quest into a change in Arthur’s relationship to his heritage: each location teaches him about an Atlantis that is older and stranger than the court he resents. Orm tightens his own coalition at home, imprisoning Vulko and forcing another kingdom into line by killing its king. His control is political as well as military, built on fear and the claim that surface people will never stop harming the sea. Mera is not merely a messenger between settings. Her refusal to become an instrument of Orm’s political marriage puts her in direct opposition to his rule, and her abilities let her manipulate water as both defense and movement. Arthur’s strength and instinctive connection with marine life complement her political knowledge, so the pair’s progress depends on different kinds of competence.

David’s attack brings the rivalry into the open. Wearing an Atlantean battle suit, he fights Arthur on land and uses its weapons to match his opponent’s strength; Arthur defeats him, but the conflict remains personal and unresolved. Arthur and Mera then travel by boat into the territory of the Trench, where amphibious creatures attack them in darkness. A strange passage carries them to an uncharted sea deep within the Earth. There they find Atlanna alive: she survived the execution sentence by escaping into this hidden region, but had been unable to find a way home. Their reunion changes the quest from a claim based on inheritance into a chance for Arthur to bring his family back together.

The Trident is guarded by the Karathen, a vast ancient creature that tests Arthur before allowing him to take the weapon. Arthur proves he can communicate with and understand the sea rather than simply command it, and the trident gives him a legitimate claim to leadership. Orm is preparing to declare himself Ocean Master through battle against the Brine kingdom; Arthur arrives with marine creatures, including the Karathen and the Trench, and confronts him. During their final duel Arthur wins but spares Orm. Orm accepts capture after learning that their mother is alive, while Atlanna returns to Thomas and Arthur takes the throne, placing a surface-raised heir at the head of an ocean society.

James Wan’s film builds its adventure around the contrast between a recognizable coastal home and elaborately imagined underwater courts, ruins, and ecosystems. The search structure lets the story move through distinct visual environments, from the desert’s buried architecture to Sicily’s bright streets and the dark Trench, while the family conflict keeps the scale understandable. Arthur’s reluctance is central: the story does not make him eager for power, but shows how avoiding responsibility leaves Orm free to define Atlantis’s future. A mid-credits scene finds the injured David rescued by Dr. Stephen Shin, who wants evidence of Atlantis; that small coda keeps David’s grievance alive beyond the central resolution. The final battle also brings the film’s competing ideas of legitimacy into view. Orm relies on lineage, ceremony, and military force; Arthur arrives with the ancient weapon but also with the ocean creatures whose lives his power can reach. The gathered Atlanteans accept the public proof of the trident, and his decision to spare Orm makes the transition from challenger to ruler a choice rather than a simple victory over a defeated sibling.
