Coordinate before you engage
The publisher’s own summary of partner play is to coordinate your approach and defend each other from surprise attacks. That means the partnership is a tactical layer: an ambush is survivable when someone is watching the angle you are not.
Share the overpowered fights
Overpowered enemies are named as something you tackle with combined strength. In practice that makes the partner the answer to a fight you cannot win alone, rather than an optional escort.
Choose who travels with you
The store notes you can choose different NPCs to partner with, and lists that choice next to class and skill changes as something that can decide between life and death. Different partners are therefore a build decision you can revisit.
