Wizard's First Rule
Richard Cypher's father was murdered a month ago, in his own home, and Richard is still dealing with the loss when he rescues Kahlan Amnell from four mercenaries.
About
Wizard's First Rule is the first book in the epic fantasy series The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind. It was published by Tor Books, released in hardcover on 15 August 1994 and in mass-market paperback in September 1995, and re-released with new cover artwork in paperback on 23 June 2001.
The opening is a murder rather than a quest. Richard Cypher's father has been killed in the family home, and while Richard is coping with that he intervenes to save Kahlan Amnell, which is how the three principal characters come together. Their aim is to reach the midlands and stop Darken Rahl's expanding empire, so the plot has a destination and an antagonist from the outset.
The novel was adapted into the television series Legend of the Seeker in 2008. Goodkind has said that selling his first book went unusually smoothly, that he wrote to the agent he wanted and was taken on, and that a number of publishers bid for the manuscript, which is a rare account of a debut epic fantasy of this length reaching print through an auction rather than through a long submission.
