Winter Fire
Sarah Kennedy was orphaned at thirteen, married at fourteen and widowed at sixteen, and has learned to rely on nobody; her brother Conner and the injured hawks she nurses are the only things she loves.
About
Winter Fire is a novel by the American writer Elizabeth Lowell, published in 1996 and set in the American West after the Civil War.
Case's quarrel is with the Culpepper family, and his pursuit of them is the engine of the plot; he arrives at Sarah's place badly hurt and is nursed back to health by a woman who does not want him there. Sarah has a brother to protect and a talent for healing, and the men she is hiding from are the same men who are hunting him. Lowell writes the western landscape as a set of practical difficulties and the relationship as an alliance that neither of them chose. The pattern is a man who trusts nobody and a woman who has never been given a reason to trust anyone, both of them learning a different lesson slowly. The novel is one of a series of romances by the author set in the same period and the same part of the country.
It is a western romance with a healer and a soldier at its centre, and it followed several other books by the same writer.
