White Fang
White Fang is a wolf and dog cross who is raised among people and becomes a deadly fighter.
About
White Fang is a novel by the American author Jack London, published in book form in October 1906 after being serialised in Outing magazine between May and October of the same year.
The book is a companion and a thematic mirror to London's better-known The Call of the Wild, published in 1903, which is about a kidnapped domestic dog returning to his wild ancestry. White Fang reverses that movement and follows a wild wolf-dog towards life with humans, and much of the novel is written from the animal's viewpoint, which lets London explore how an animal experiences people rather than the other way round.
The setting is the Yukon and the Northwest Territories during the Klondike gold rush of the 1890s, where dogs were working equipment rather than pets. London gives the animal the point of view for much of the book, and the story is a sequence of owners and environments rather than a single adventure: the wild, a Native camp, a dog-fighting operation and finally a Californian household. The gold rush is the reason so many men and dogs are in the territory at all, and the interest of the novel is in what domestication costs and what it makes possible.
