Where the Mountain Meets the Moon
Minli lives in the Village of Fruitless Mountain, where the ground is too hard to farm and the families have very little.
About
Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a children's fantasy novel written and illustrated by the American author Grace Lin, published in 2009.
Beside a bare mountain the Jade River runs past a village so poor that there is barely enough rice to feed it, and Minli, who is ten, grows up listening to the tales her father Ba tells over dinner. Her mother Ma has no patience for them at all, and her bitterness about the family's poverty shapes the household. Minli decides to do something about their situation instead of waiting for it to improve, and she leaves the only place she has ever lived. The dragon the mountain belongs to is the Jade Dragon, and the Jade River that runs past the village takes its name from him.
Chinese folk tales are told inside the main narrative rather than kept apart from it, and the illustrations are the author's own. In 2010 the book received a Newbery Honor and the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Children's Literature, and it has since been translated into Chinese, French, Hebrew, Romanian, Korean and Slovene.
