Walk Two Moons
Salamanca Hiddle's mother has left home, and Sal sets off on a long car journey with her grandparents, retracing the route her mother took towards Idaho.
About
Walk Two Moons is a novel by the American writer Sharon Creech, published in 1994. It was awarded the Newbery Medal the following year, and it is widely taught in schools as a book about loss and about the assumptions people make about one another.
Sal Hiddle is thirteen. She and her grandparents come from Bybanks in Kentucky and are living for a time in Ohio, and her mother, Chanhassen, has gone away from the family, which is the reason for the journey they take together towards Lewiston in Idaho.
To pass the time on the road Sal tells her grandparents about Phoebe Winterbottom, a friend from Ohio whose mother also disappeared and whose family responded in its own fashion. Sal's account of Phoebe gives her a way of talking about her own difficulties without approaching them directly, and the novel moves between the journey and the story told inside it, so that the reader comes to understand Sal's situation slightly before she does. The book was Creech's second novel, following Absolutely Normal Chaos, though the two are only loosely connected.
