Gideon is a contract killer who works in a world of money, hotels and women, and he has always been the one in control of the game.

About

Waking with Enemies is a novel by the American writer Eric Jerome Dickey, published in 2007 and a sequel to Sleeping with Strangers.

Gideon's trade requires him to be careful and to travel, and the novel opens with that carefulness defeated: he wakes in a hotel room full of evidence of a night he cannot remember, in a city that is not his, with three women who may or may not be what they appear to be. The book follows him as he tries to establish who has set him up and why, and as people from his earlier life in Detroit and Los Angeles come back into contact with him. Dickey writes the thriller at speed but gives as much room to the relationships as to the killing, and Gideon's voice is the reason the book works.

It is the second of two novels about the same character, and it picks up directly from the cliffhanger that ended the first, which is why the two books are usually read together.
