Velvet Angel
Elizabeth is handed to Miles Montgomery as a kind of gift, rolled up in a rug, and the two of them are already enemies before they meet.
About
Velvet Angel is a historical romance by the American writer Jude Deveraux, published in 1983 and part of her Montgomery family series.
The novel is set in a version of medieval England where two families, the Montgomerys and the Chatworths, have been at war with each other long enough that neither side remembers how it started. Elizabeth is a Chatworth who is delivered to Miles Montgomery as a present, wrapped in a rug, and the situation the two of them are put in is the engine of the book: an attraction neither of them will admit to, a vendetta that both families expect to be continued, and a household in which Elizabeth is at the mercy of the man she is supposed to hate. Deveraux wrote a long sequence of novels about the Montgomery family in different periods, and this one belongs to the earliest part of that history.
The Montgomerys appear in a long sequence of her novels, and the books about them move between medieval and later settings.
