After a war over abortion, a compromise called the Bill of Life allows a child between thirteen and eighteen to be unwound, with every part of the body transplanted rather than the child being killed.

About

Unwind is a dystopian novel by Neal Shusterman, published in 2007 and the first book of a series. It is set in a near-future United States in which a civil war over abortion ended with a constitutional compromise: a child's life cannot be ended, but between the ages of thirteen and eighteen it can be unwound.

The book follows three of the young people affected. Connor is a troublemaker whose parents have signed the order, Risa is a ward of the state nobody thinks is worth keeping, and Lev has been raised to believe that being unwound is a gift. The three of them run, meet, and travel towards a place where the procedure is performed on an industrial scale.

Shusterman builds the novel around the argument that the compromise makes everyone complicit, and he shares the point of view between all three runaways so that no single one of them has to carry the case alone. It was followed by further volumes in the same world, and the book's device is that the reader is shown the argument from three positions rather than one.
