Unlikely Match
Ruth Kauffman is shy, and she is delighted when Charles Polk asks her out: he is handsome, hard-working and genuinely interested in her.
About
Unlikely Match is a Christian romance by the American writer Debby Mayne, published in 2011. It is set among a Mennonite community in Sarasota.
Ruth Kauffman is shy, and she is excited when Charles Polk asks her on a date, because he is handsome, hard-working and seems genuinely interested in her, unlike the last boy she had a crush on. The complication is that Charles and his parents are not Mennonite, though not for much longer: they are seriously considering joining Ruthie's church and embracing a simple life. That prospect is not welcomed by everybody in the congregation, and some of its members disapprove of the family and refuse to accept them into the community. When a disaster strikes Charles's family, Ruthie is caught in the middle of the argument, between the people she has grown up with and the man she is coming to love, and the question the novel turns on is whether she can trust Charlie and her own growing feelings for him enough to stand by him.
Mayne writes romances set in the American South, and the community in this book is the setting for both the courtship and the conflict. It appeared in a line of short Christian romances published by Barbour.
