Three Days in June
Gail Baines has lost her job, or left it, depending on who is telling the truth, and her daughter is getting married tomorrow.
About
Three Days in June is a novel by the American writer Anne Tyler, published in 2025. Tyler won the Pulitzer Prize for Breathing Lessons and has written more than twenty novels about families in Baltimore.
The book covers the days immediately before and after her daughter Debbie's wedding, and it is told from the point of view of Gail Baines, the mother of the bride, who is socially awkward and not much inclined to pretend otherwise. Gail loses or leaves her job, is left out of the wedding preparations that the other family has organised, and then has to absorb the arrival of her former husband with nowhere to go and a secret that her daughter has just learned about the man she is marrying. Tyler keeps the story inside the household and inside the small failures of tact that families specialise in, and the wedding, the food and the errands of a large day provide the structure. Her subject has always been the ordinary arrangements people make with one another, and this is one of her shortest novels.
Tyler published her first novel in 1964 and this book appeared in her eighties, and it was written, like the rest of her work, about a particular Baltimore and its families.
