Things We Never Got Over

Lucy Score's Things We Never Got Over, published in 2022, begins with Naomi riding into Knockemout, Virginia, to rescue her estranged twin sister. She is not running away from her own wedding; she is coming to help Tina, and finds her sister unchanged. Tina takes Naomi's car and her cash, and leaves behind something Naomi did not know existed, an eleven-year-old niece. Knockemout itself is a place on the rough side, where quarrels tend to be settled with beer and fists.

The first person Naomi meets is Knox, the local barber, who takes his coffee and his life the same way: alone, unless his basset hound, Waylon, is counted, and who has no patience for drama, even when it arrives as a runaway bride stranded in his town. Naomi is left with no transport, no work, no plan and no home, plus a niece who is eleven going on thirty, and the town has firm ideas about the two of them.
