The Wedding
Wilson Lewis has been married to Jane for thirty years and has spent most of them at the office, leaving the raising of their children to her.
About
The Wedding is a novel by the American writer Nicholas Sparks, published in 2003 as a follow-up to The Notebook.
Noah and Allie Calhoun, whose fifty-year marriage was the subject of the earlier book, are Wilson's in-laws, and their example is the standard against which he has been failing for years: he is a man who cannot say what he feels, and the novel follows his attempts to repair his marriage in the months around his daughter's wedding. Sparks keeps the story in Wilson's own account of himself, which is why the book's difficulties are domestic and specific rather than dramatic, and the weddings themselves — his daughter's and, eventually, another one — provide the occasions for the gestures he has never made. It is one of the novels in which Sparks's interest is less in courtship than in the maintenance of a long marriage, and it is written for readers of The Notebook who wanted to know what happened to the family afterwards. The book was a bestseller on publication and was adapted for film in 2005.
