The Vanishing Half
Twin sisters Stella and Desiree Vignes run away from the small Louisiana town of Mallard as teenagers, and their lives separate completely.
About
The Vanishing Half is a historical novel by the American writer Brit Bennett, published by Riverhead Books in 2020 and her second book. It debuted at number one on the New York Times fiction bestseller list, and the rights to develop it for television were acquired.
Stella and Desiree Vignes are identical twins from a town founded by a family that prides itself on its light skin. They leave as teenagers and their paths divide: Desiree goes back to Louisiana and raises her daughter there, while Stella passes as white, marries and lives in a suburb where nobody knows her history. The novel traces what that decision does to the people on both sides of it, including the daughter Stella leaves behind and the cousin who eventually finds out.
Bennett tells the story across two generations and several decades, and the question of identity arrives through the practical arrangements her characters make rather than through argument. It was one of the most discussed American novels of its year, and its two timelines let the consequences of a single decision run for decades.
