The Unfairest of Them All

The Unfairest of Them All is a fantasy novel for young readers by the American writer Shannon Hale, published in 2014. It is part of the Ever After High series, in which the children of fairy-tale characters go to school together.

The story begins in the aftermath of Legacy Day, when the students are supposed to pledge that they will follow the lives their parents lived. Raven Queen, the daughter of the Evil Queen, has refused to sign the Storybook of Legends, which rejects her own story and puts everybody else's future in question.

Apple White, the Royal who is supposed to be poisoned and rescued in her own tale, cannot decide whether Raven is being difficult or doing something brave. Behind her stand the Royals, who want to keep the stories as they are, and against her stand the Rebels, who argue that a person should be able to write her own. The rivalry reaches into the school's routines and friendships, and the novel follows the students as they work out what they owe to their stories.
