The Troop
Every year a scoutmaster takes a group of boys camping in the Canadian wilderness for a weekend, and this year a stranger reaches their camp: emaciated, pale, starving and carrying a man-made parasite inside him.
About
The Troop is a horror novel by the Canadian writer Craig Davidson, published in 2014 under the pen name Nick Cutter. It took the first James Herbert Award for Horror Writing.
The book follows five teenage boys and their scoutmaster on a weekend camping trip to remote Falstaff Island. The trip is meant to test the boys' self-reliance, and it leaves them far from any help and with no way to call for it.
A stranger reaches their camp, emaciated, pale and starving, carrying inside him a parasite that was made rather than grown. The infection spreads through the group quickly, and the boys have neither the medicine nor the distance from one another to contain it.
Stranded, hungry and frightened, they turn on one another, and the novel is as interested in the cruelty already loose in the group as in the parasite itself. It is a standalone novel.
