The Sword of Summer
Magnus Chase has lived alone on the streets of Boston since the night two years ago when his mother told him to run, surviving by his wits and staying ahead of the police and truant officers.
About
The Sword of Summer is a young adult fantasy novel based on Norse mythology by the American author Rick Riordan, published on 6 October 2015 by Disney Hyperion. It is the first novel in the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series.
Magnus is sixteen, homeless and an orphan when the story opens. He learns of a birthright that has been lost for thousands of years, and the material that surfaces from his memory concerns the gods of Asgard, wolves and the end of the world. The novel does not delay his decision for long: a fire giant attacks the city and he has to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of strangers.
The book received positive reviews, which praised its plot, humour, the inclusion of diverse characters and its mature themes, while some critics noted that it does not rise far above the author's earlier series. Magnus arrives in a Norse afterlife as an Einherji and discovers that he is the son of the deity Frey, which sets up his task of preventing Fenris Wolf from leaving his prison and ending the world.
